Trey Houston’s Summer Intensive Nu AbNormal Photography Project, A Collaboration

Trey Houston, like many parent artists, has valiantly persevered during challenging times when schools and other places that children count on for stimulation and growth have been off-limits. His daughter, Annika, took a leading role with him during ArtSeed’s 2021 Summer Intensive. She is the one with cat ears above!

Annika taught everyone how to draw a bird from two Xs.

Artist Statement:

I am a quadriplegic who has found a new passion—watercolors. Encouraged by my two artist friends, Josefa Vaughan and Yohana Knobloch, I am fascinated with color and light. After working 14 years for a home care providers referral agency, I’m entering a new chapter in my life—self-expression!

Virtual & In-person Gatherings, Teaching, Learning, and Art-making Together!
(Number of new artworks created: over 200!)

November 19, 2021

Dear ArtSeed Friend,

We did it again! Thanks to you we were able to endure and thrive while complying with San Francisco’s Health Order. Our 13th Annual Earth Day Art-a-thon, a virtual event, was a real success. Your support also made possible our annual Fine Arts Summer Intensive with two in-person locations and an online site connecting opposite ends of the city with more far-flung participants. Click here to see photos! Click here to see the calendar of activities. Click here to see a list of participants. Without interruption, our 2020 show, Only Zombies Race to Mass Extinction morphed into this year’s exciting interactive exhibition of art—extended into 2022!—New Normal: Learning from the Past to Move Forward Together.

ArtSeed’s Annual Fine Arts Interactive Exhibition

China Brotsky and Seed Galleries at Tides Converge in the Presidio

ArtSeed’s current exhibition evolved from our previous annual show, seamlessly attempting to reflect on both years’ unimaginable events. Children and Veterans have worked with artists to pose questions and reveal the challenges and power of this moment. How can people of various political and cultural persuasions resolve conflict and grapple with environmental and political issues disproportionately affecting communities of color and the poor? Can art heal social and personal wounds? Are we not all creators?

Trey Houston, Teaching Artist

Nu AbNormal Photography Project. People have had to adapt to live normally in an upside-down world. Or, was life ever normal, or right side up, to begin with? Participants were challenged to discern what perceptions of their lives were normal, or abnormal, in the past, present or future. By obscuring and transforming their photo portraits they created a new abnormal version of themselves.
