Marissa Kunz and Peter Mann have been central to decades of ArtSeed activities including Art-a-thons, arts education outreach in Thailand, and ArtSeed’s Summer Intensives. Especially memorable was when Bay School of San Francisco hosted ArtSeed’s 2010 Don Quixote Intensive led by Marissa and Peter with support from guest artists including Peter’s author portrait photographer, Trey Houston. We are proud of their continued success!

A brilliant debut novel, at once teasing literary thriller and a darkly comic blend of history and invention, The Torqued Man is set in wartime Berlin and propelled by two very different but equally mesmerizing voices: a German spy handler and his Irish secret agent, neither of whom are quite what they seem.

Peter Mann grew up in Kansas City. He teaches history and literature at Stanford and is a past recipient of the Whiting Fellowship. He is also a graphic artist & cartoonist and draws the online comic The Quixote SyndromeThe Torqued Man is his first novel.

For those in the Bay Area, there will be an in-person book event at Book Passage in the San Francisco Ferry Building, on Sunday, March 6 at 2 pm.

The author’s wife, teaching artist Marissa Kunz, is ArtSeed’s co-founder.

Looking for Mardi Gras ideas? Here’s a sneak peek at how Marissa makes her costumes:

“In the weeks and months leading up to Halloween each year, many of my elementary students would eagerly ask me what I planned to make for my costume that year. It has been a fun tradition to make something from scratch for a captivated audience. My Halloween costume this year was inspired by the giant forest troll sculptures of Danish artist Thomas Dambo. Figuring out how to create geometric shapes that fit perfectly into the desired configuration was a challenge at first. I ended up working quite organically, slowly adding piece by piece, holding a shape up to a gap and trimming it as needed, then hot-glueing it into place when it felt right. There was plenty of trial and error.

The centerpieces of my all recent costumes — a zebra-unicorn, swamp monster, water faucet, the Incredible Hulk, Merl, my school’s resident pet cockatiel, and the forest troll, have been handmade hat forms created from simple recycled materials like cardboard and/or papier-mâché. To make them, I start with a strip of cardboard roughly 1 inch wide, taped or stapled to fit around my head and sit comfortably just above the brow. To this first band, I attach two more bands that criss-cross on the top of my head. Depending on my idea, typically sketched out beforehand, I would add onto this basic form more cardboard or balls of newspaper. With the exception of the forest troll where I left the cardboard exposed, I add several layers of papier-mâché and paint to complete the piece. My preferred papier-mâché paste recipe is 50% water and 50% Elmer’s glue. Give it a try!”
