Kathryn Kain was born in Toledo, Ohio and studied art at the Cleveland Art Institute, Toledo University and Arizona State before settling in the San Francisco Bay Area. She completed a BFA, emphasis on printmaking at San Jose State University. After further study with Kenjilo Nanao and Misch Kohn at Cal State Hayward, she earned her MFA in printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Kathryn Kain has maintained a professional studio in San Francisco’s Hunters Point Shipyard for many years, and ArtSeed’s live in Cottage Residency has made it possible for Kathryn to remain in the city as she looks for affordable housing. Nature, nurture and the deep connection between humans and plants inspire her work. Drawing perishable objects in the vanitas still life tradition, her work features beautifully rendered fruits, flowers and branches. Selected ephemera, collected images and found papers offer hints of narrative in her drawings and prints. With her strong ties to the Bay area art community Kathryn works as printmaker and instructor privately as well as for Stanford University, the San Francisco Art Institute and Santa Clara University. She’s also taught at San Jose State University, Blufton College and Dominican University. ArtSeed students of all ages have a unique opportunity to work directly with an highly experienced and distinguished professional artist. She looks forward to bringing her expertise to more ArtSeed families interested in private instruction.

The cottage has a striking view of the city of San Francisco and also a tranquil atmosphere, ideal for an artist to be creative. Getting involved the program, has enabled me to expand my expertise into the field of teaching. ArtSeed has opened doors for me in schools, the Disney Family Museum, and job opportunities previously out of my reach.The Artist in Residence program also helps artists of various disciplines to find each other which opens up new collaborative possibilities. I will miss my time at The Cottage but look forward to continuing to work with ArtSeed.

How has technology and the economy it fosters changed the way people live, work, and communicate? Will the youngest and most vulnerable citizens in the future live on a safe, healthy planet? With such questions in mind, hundreds of ArtSeed’s school children and artists have made art to be viewed through the lens of poverty’s many faces, including racism and other forms of prejudice. Some have addressed the issues directly, others have simply made what has moved or healed them. ArtSeed’s wonderful partners include students, teachers and staff at Leola M. Havard and Presidio Early Education Schools, SF Public Montessori School, Marina Middle School, St. Brigid School, SF Montessori Academy, and the Presidio Trust.
