ArtSeed Reception at Arion Press

Arion Press and ArtSeed invite you to a reception at the Press on Friday, February 25th, 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. This event celebrates a showing there of imagery inspired by Don Quixote produced by young artists participating in ArtSeed’s most recent Summer Intensive. It will also serve as a free Kick-off party for the April 16 Earth Week Art-a-thon sponsored by Pamakid Runners. This event will raise funds for needy children to receive scholarships to the next ArtSeed Summer Intensive June 27-July1, 2011. ArtSeed is a unique and innovative San Francisco arts education program that puts students from diverse backgrounds in touch with artists and other professionals in a variety of fields. As part of last year’s Intensive, ArtSeed students visited Arion Press during production of Book II of Don Quixote. There, they learned first-hand about book making and relief printing and went on to make their own Quixote-inspired collages, puppets, and films, including the linoleum and styrofoam block prints on display at the Press. The evening will include a 45 minute program with readings and music including Allerton Steele (roughmagic.com), Fran Johns (trueslant.com/franjohns) and the Crank Ensemble (crankensemble.com).

Also on display are images by Los Angeles artist Raymond Pettibon, one of the hottest contemporary American artists, whose lurid images have intrigued art collectors and curators ever since he burst onto the scene in the late eighties. These works illustrate the recent Arion Press publication of South of Heaven by “The King of Pulps”, Jim Thompson.
